What is a Passphrase?

A passphrase is a sequence of words that is used as a password. It is typically longer than a traditional password, but because it is made up of words, it can be easier to remember. The concept was popularized by the webcomic XKCD, which illustrated that a long, memorable passphrase like "correct-horse-battery-staple" is more secure and easier to remember than a short, complex password like "Tr0ub4dor&3".

The Diceware Method

Our passphrase generator uses a method inspired by Diceware, a system for creating passphrases by rolling dice and looking up words in a wordlist. This ensures that the words are truly random and not easily guessable. Our generator uses a curated wordlist of common, easy-to-spell words to maximize memorability without sacrificing security.

Benefits of Using Passphrases

  • Increased Security: The length of a passphrase is its greatest strength. A 4-word passphrase can have a higher entropy than a 12-character random password, making it much harder to crack.
  • Memorability: Human brains are wired to remember words and stories. A passphrase is a mini-story, making it easier to recall than a jumble of random characters.
  • Ease of Use: Typing words is generally faster and less error-prone than typing a complex password with symbols and numbers.
