What is a Data Breach?

A data breach is a security incident in which sensitive, protected or confidential data is copied, transmitted, viewed, stolen or used by an individual unauthorized to do so. Data breaches may involve financial information such as credit card or bank details, personal health information (PHI), personally identifiable information (PII), trade secrets of corporations or intellectual property.

How Do Data Breaches Happen?

Data breaches can happen in a variety of ways, including:

  • Hacking: Cybercriminals use various techniques to gain unauthorized access to systems and databases.
  • Malware: Malicious software can be used to steal data from computers and networks.
  • Phishing: Scammers trick people into revealing their personal information.
  • Insider Threats: Employees or former employees may intentionally or unintentionally leak data.
  • Physical Theft: Laptops, hard drives, and other devices containing sensitive data can be stolen.

What to Do if Your Email is in a Breach

  1. Change Your Password Immediately: If your email was part of a breach, the first thing you should do is change the password for that account.
  2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): 2FA adds an extra layer of security to your accounts.
  3. Monitor Your Accounts: Keep an eye on your accounts for any suspicious activity.
  4. Be Wary of Phishing Scams: Scammers may use information from data breaches to target you with phishing emails.
